What is the full form of IRU?

Indefeasible rights of use are Abbreviated as IRU. It is most widely used in the telecommunication sector. As the name indicates indefeasible which means "not liable of being annulled or undone".It is a contractual agreement used between an owner who owes a fibre cable and a buyer who buys the fibre cable. In this agreement, a buyer can use a Requisite amount of capacity of the system. It is also referred to as Dark fibre.

Unlike others, it is a permanent agreement that lasts for 10-20 years. Generally, the life of an optical fibre cable only lasts for 20 to 30 years. IRU is so expensive that a smaller company cannot have much money to afford it. In this agreement, a buyer can afford an exclusive and indefeasible amount of capacity for a particular period mentioned in a contract.

Inertial reference unit(IRU)

It is used as an applicational device in Physics. It consists of a gyroscope and accelerometer to regulate and determine the rotational motion(moment of force, angular momentum) and translational position(Altitude, latitude) of a flying aircraft. In the presence of IRU, there is no use of external support to govern the condition of aircraft or missiles.

Dark fibre is an unlit fibre (unused) that has to be used in fibre optic communication. It is called dark because it has to be illuminated by the IRU owner. Dark fibres can be used unlimitedly under IRU. The purchase of IRU is only a one-time investment. Buying an optical fibre is not recommended. Instead making an IRU contract is preferable so the buyer can use it exclusively for legal purposes throughout their lifetime. In the contract of IRU, the owner will include all the technical terms and specialisations regarding optical fibre and its maintenance.

Uses of IRU

  • For the usage of dark fibre, the limited period of IRU is 15 or 20 years

  • IRU is most widely used in connectivity services and the communication industry

  • As many startup companies can't have money to afford fibre cables, developed companies sell their facility or grant an IRU

Lease and IRU:

We often use IRU interchangeably with lease, In fact, they are more likely to be similar. The only difference between a lease and IRU is, the term of the agreement is short for a lease compared to IRU.

Similarities:

  • Once the term of the agreement expires, then the assets are transferred to the owner for both cases.

  • Even if the capacity of the system is used by the customer, the title of the property remains unchanged i.e property still belongs to the owner.

  • In both cases, fibre cables are used indefeasibly and exclusively for legal purposes
