Both the options are better that totally depends upon you in which mode you want to go with it. See I will advise for you is to first test yourself in the starting month of your Class 11th tenure if you feels that you are capable enough to do it with your self then it's very good and of suppose you need some type of support for your preparation then without hesitation and time wasting join any good coaching institute with the very first day of this thought because every day is precious during the preparation.

For JEE, it totally depends on you. If you think you are capable enough of understanding the concepts and solving the sums then you can buy any JEE books and start studying or better if you joined any classes because you can clear your doubts as well.
