Tell me about its ranking according to NIRF
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a system adopted by the Government of India to rank higher education institutions across the country. Launched in 2015, NIRF aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation based on several key parameters. Instead of just an overall ranking, NIRF also provides rankings for specific categories like engineering, management, pharmacy, colleges, universities, and more recently, even for innovation and research institutions.
The ranking methodology considers various aspects of an institution's performance, grouped into five main criteria. These are Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) , which looks at faculty strength, student-faculty ratio, and infrastructure; Research and Professional Practice (RP) , which assesses the quality and impact of research and publications; Graduation Outcomes (GO) , focusing on placement rates and the success of graduates; Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) , which examines the diversity of students and efforts to include marginalized sections; and Perception (PR) , which is based on the reputation of the institution among peers and employers.
Each of these broad parameters has several sub-parameters with assigned weights. For example, under TLR, the faculty-student ratio and the qualifications of the faculty are considered. Similarly, under RP, the number and quality of research publications and patents filed are evaluated. The scores obtained by institutions across all these parameters are then aggregated to determine their overall rank in different categories.
The NIRF rankings are released annually and are widely used by students to make informed decisions about where to pursue their higher education. A good NIRF ranking often indicates that the institution has a strong academic standing, good infrastructure, quality research output, and a positive perception among stakeholders. It also encourages institutions to strive for continuous improvement in all the parameters considered for ranking.
