How do you name haloalkanes and haloarenes using IUPAC nomenclature?
Answer (1)
- Haloalkanes: The halogen atom is treated as a substituent (prefix) to the parent alkane chain. Number the carbon chain to give the halogen the lowest possible number. Examples: 2-chlorobutane, 1-iodo-2-methylpropane.
- Haloarenes: Halogens are also named as prefixes. If there are other substituents, number the ring to give the substituents the lowest possible numbers, keeping in mind any directing effects (ortho, para, meta) of the halogen. Example: 4-bromotoluene, 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene
