Nautical science is the study of marine Navigation. It is a three years course after which the student joins a ship as trainee cadet officer. Indian Maritime University (IMU), Visakhapatnam Campus prepares students for Design and Construction of Marine Crafts & Structures. The graduate students will find employment in Shipping, Shipbuilding, Ocean Engineering Industries, Indian Navy, DRDO, Classification Societies etc. There are huge potential in it to get promotions and pay rises.

While marine engineering makes an individual a ship's engineer, nautical science prepares a person to become a deck officer. Nautical science is a three years course after which the student joins a ship as trainee cadet officer.
