Dear Akki ,
Great that you are interested in UPSC administered Civil Services Examination and have a query around this.
You will be amazed to know that every year about 11 lakh candidates appear in the prelims for the civil services examination. Based on the results of UPSC Prelims, nearly 20 thousand candidates get shortlisted for Mains level. Further based on the UPSC Mains results, a few thousand (say three to four times the recruitment number) are invited for Interview. Finally, a merit list is prepared of all those selected for interview and based on the merit list, the final recommended candidates join the All India Services including the top three, IFS, IAS and IPS.
The UPSC Prelims tests the candidate upon his General Studies and Aptitude Paper. The GS papers include all those papers which you have studied in Class 6th to Class 12th - Geography, History, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Political Science, Technology, Static General Knowledge, etc.
However, the prelims stage doesn't require any optional paper. You have to choose an optional paper for the Mains stage, where you will be appearing in two different papers on the subject.
The prelims preparation is easy but needs dedication and proper strategy. You have to brush up all your basics, mainly the text-books of NCERT from all those Classes 6-12. You also need to keep an eye on the recent happenings across the world and certainly those which affect the Indian economy, Indian geography, Indian politics and Indian ecosystem.
I hope your query has been answered. Still, if something remains, please counter-question me and I'll be happy to answer that too.
You know one more thing can help you in strategic preparation, the habit of remaining curious, the act of questioning. So ask as many questions as you can, and know as much as you need.
Thank you.
All the best!
