WHY DID THE ASTRONAUTS NOT USE A PENCIL OR A CHALK TO WRITE IN SPACE INTEAD OF MAKING A NEW AND ADVANCED PEN AND WASTING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS
Hello Student,
The idea that space agencies spent millions of dollars only to create a special pen while a pencil or chalk could have been used is a common misconception. In reality, pencile and chalk are not ideal for use in space because small particles from graphite or chalk can break off and float around in microgravity. These particles may enter astronaut's eyes, damage sensitive equipment, or create electrical hazards.
To address this issue, a pressurized pen was developed that could write in zero gravity, underwater, and in extreme temperature. The development cost was borne by a private company, and the pen was later adopted by space agencies because it was safer and more reliable than pencile.
Therefore, the decision was based on safety and practicality rater than unnecessary spending.
