What is the full form of TRP?

TRP rate is the television rating point. This is a metric used to indicate the popularity of a television show. By the help of trp, one can know how popular the show is or if the audience finds the show interesting or not. It is a measure which shows the success of that particular show. The greater the TRP, the more engaging the show is, and bad TRP shows that the show isn't loved by the audience or isn't great. This information is being used by the advertisers as they put their advertisements between the shows so that they'll engage more audiences.

How Is TRP Calculated?

In India, the agency working on the calculation of the TRP is Broadcast Audience Research Council. They use BAR-O-meters. List of TRP is released by Barc every week.

The methods used by them are :

  1. Frequency monitoring method- in this method, a device is installed in the household of some people. It records the timings and programs that are being watched by the viewers and thus helps in judging the viewers' choices of shows. This records for an average of 30 days. But the drawback is, this device is costly and is exported from abroad.

  2. Picture matching technique- in this method, the meter records small portions of the picture of the show that is being watched by the viewers. The meter records continuously. After this, data collection takes place, and national rating is calculated. This is a new technique and is more reliable.

Advantages Of TRP

  • TRP helps companies to target the audience based on their popularity and evaluate their ROI.

  • It also enables broadcasting companies to charge higher pay from advertisers when there are shows with higher ratings.

  • TRPs are the main currency for advertisers to decide which channel to advertise on by calculating the cost-per-rating-point.

Limitations Of TRP

  • The panel can be manipulated by bribing viewers or cable operators.

  • There is no specific law through which the agents/suspects involved in panel tampering/infiltration could be penalized.

  • About 70% of the revenue for television channels comes from advertising and only 30% from the subscription. This Dependence on advertisements for revenue is leading to broadcasting content which suits the advertisers.
