I am also a mechanical scholar. And recently I came to know that mechanical students can not only give gate exam but they are also having better chances of qualifying it with a very good rank.

One more thing mechanical is a fantastic branch I appreciate your choice

 IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Rookee. 
The maximum salary of a student from any of these IITs has gone as high as 50 lakhs per annum or even higher. 
The minimum salary may go as low as 4 lakhs per annum or even less.

You can absolutely change the major for your masters. If you want a masters degree in Mechanical engineering with a bachelors in Industrial design, it is absolutely possible. You will have to appear for GATE Mechanical engineering.

Firstly, if you want to study a Core Branch then definitely Mechanical Engineering will suffice. Then you must go ahead with Mechanical Engineering at NIT Kurukshetra.

Yes there is female quota in NIT Kurukshetra.

Infact as per government norms all of the 31 NITs and the 23 IITs have supernumerary female only seats which are alloted to girl candidates. In 2018 it was started with 14 percent which has been increased to 17% in 2019.
