Hi,
You should start your prep at Home not only on time but with all the resources necessary for the same. Firstly, embark on your IAS preparation by collecting books for each subject NCERT books from class 6 to 12 can be considered as the holy books for IAS preparation. Next, read news paper on a pretty regular basis to correlate current affairs with each subject. Remember that UPSC will form questions on logical basis rather than direct questions. When you are thorough with the syllabus, Practice answering questions from last year papers. Analyse these papers. Attending mock tests will enable you to evaluate your strength and weakness. Simply attending mock test won’t work out, but interpretation of mistakes and its correction will let you to quick march to your desired service. Keep a tab of government websites and other IAS sites that will keep you updated. Alternately, you can also pick up notes from a known coaching centre or teacher to aid with your prep.
All the best!!!
Dear Harry Singh,
Firstly, you should go through the exam pattern and the syllabus. Check the subject which you need to take as an optional. After that assimilate the right study material, books, question papers and some good magazines like Yojana which you must read.
If you are planning to appear for the exam in 2019, then your aim should be to thoroughly finish of your preparation for prelims by October 2018. Depending on the time you are comfortable studying divide your day, if you are aiming to study 12 hours then, you must prepare simultaneously for prelims and mains. Make sure you read one good newspaper and listen to the news on Doordarshan or All India Radio. This will help you to know about the policy decisions of the government and important announcements that are made.
By October, you should be ready to take mock exams. It is at that time, maybe you can join some coaching institute to assess your preparation.
The biggest advantage for studying at home is that you need not have to bother about food and all. However, make sure that you do not get distracted by television or social media. These mediums should be used for your advantage only.
Remember one thing, UPSC exam is all about strategic preparation and not intensive research. You should study from two to three books for each subject but you should be thorough with it. Sometimes one tends to get bogged down by too much study material.
