Dear Shivam, as per the Medical Council of India's Screening Test Regulation Rules of 2002, any candidate who has completed their MBBS from outside India but wishes to practise in the country will have to clear a screening test called as FMGE or the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination. FMGE is held for medical graduates wishing to get a provisional or permanent registration with Medical Council of India (MCI) or any State Medical Council (SMC). Aimed at assessing the in depth knowledge of a candidate, the FMGE was made mandatory in the year 2002 for all Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). FMGE is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) twice a year, in the months of June and December. The exam consists of one paper to be taken in online mode on a Computer Based Platform (CBT) and comprises 300 multiple choice, single correct response questions in English language only, delivered in two parts to be taken in a single day. The examination scheduled for December 2017 will be held on December 21, 2017. As per the eligibility rules, the candidate should possess a primary medical qualification which is confirmed by the Indian Embassy. If you have studied in Nepal, you will only be recognized as a proper medical practitioner and become eligible for FMGE if your degree was from any of the following institutes - B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan; Nepalgunj Medical College, Banke; College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Chitwan; Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences; Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS), Pokhara; Institute of Medicine at Tribhuvan University; Universal College of Medical Sciences, Bhairawaha. Please note that studying at these institutes does not make you eligible for practice in India, but only qualifies you for an Eligibility Certificate by MCI which will entitle you to appear in the Screening Test and later allow you to gain a provisional/permanent registration by your concerned State Medical Council. MCI recognition only extends to this much and not in allowing students to straightaway register themselves and start practise. The only candidates who do not need to appear for FMGE are those who have completed their Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical qualification from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK or USA and have been recognized for enrollment as medical practitioners in these countries.
