what does top 20 percentile mean? please explain.I got 72% in my boards for the year 2018-2019 and according to NTA 75% is the minimum eligibility criteria for jee main so i am taking an improvement exam only in 2 subjects maths and chemistry. So how much do i have to score in each subject ?

Dear Ritika, For example, if you are studying in a class of 100, top 20 percentile means you should secure better marks than 80 students. In simple terms, your class rank should be between 1-20. Do not confuse percentage with percentile. Percentage is your score out of 100. For example if you scored 80 out of 100, your percentage is 80%. Your percentile shows the percentage of Candidates who scored lesser than you. With 72 percentile, ypu fared better than 72 percentage of your Class. Now to score 75%, we also need the no.of Candidates in your board wih aggregate marks less than you.
The percentile will be calculated using the formula:
No.of Candidates in your Board who scored less than you100/Total no.of Candidates in your Board.

let me clear your doubt.
top 20 percentile in any exam means that you are ahead of rest 80 percentstudent who have the same exam that you have given.
The top 20 percentile of class 12 boards will be considered for admission to the 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 23 GFTIs. Candidates have to fulfill any of the two conditions for admission –
(a) score minimum 75% marks, or
(b) be ranked in the top 20 percentile in their respective boards

Please tell me if u have any idea about how much do i have to actually score in my maths and chemistry paper to be in top 20 percentile so that i would be eligible for taking admission in NITS,IITS,etc.. I am from CBSE BOARD
