Preparing from Gate with the help of book only is not an easy task. You can take help of books but you should prepare self handwritten notes or get from any coaching.You can use books when the topic is not clear from notes.
Some suggested books are:
Engineering Mathematics:HK Das
Fluid Mechanics by RK Bansal
Environmental Engineering by Garg
Structural Analysis:Ramamurtham
You should also go through the previous year question papers so that you can get the idea which types of questions comes in the exam.

They would take the average of both papers to check your eligiblity.
Since your average is higher in than the minimum required ,you would be able to attend counselling and also procure a seat.
Both your papers constitute Maths,therefore the average of them is your aggregate Maths total.
GATE is a national level entrance test conducted jointly by seven IITs and IISc and is sometimes compulsory for recruitment to many private organisations.

The choice of subject in this senario is very subjective and will vary from person to person. If you find yourself having a very analytical mind and capable of handling both Ecomonics and UPSC studies, you should choose B.A. Economics. In case you are passionate about English Literature and don't mind studying loads of Literatary texts and History of Literature and practice lot of creative writing such as essay, report, etc. you should choose B.A. English.
