Aerospace Engineering
Hey,
The pay in petroleum is nice, but honestly, after about five years experience with ANY engineering profession, if you're wanting more money, you're just a greedy slob. Choice has to be made based on your interest. Aerospace engineers CAN work as mechanical engineers, and can work very well. There will always be planes and rockets that need to be designed and built. Obviously mechanical engineers will always be able to find a job somewhere, even if we regress to the dark ages. Petroleum engineers, I guess it really depends on whether we as a species decide to move beyond oil like we need to. Rest it is upto you what interest you more!

JU Mechanical happens to be a very well known dept. with a very strong alumni network. Pay packages are decent & you will end up getting a pretty stable & secured job (you should not be expecting packages like those offered in CSE obviously). As for research, this is the sector where JU comes in. Research scope is very good in JU. At the same time, students fare very well in examinations like GATE, GRE etc & end up being in some of the best universities & colleges in the world.
If we talk about placements, future scope and current market situation NIT's mechanical engineering will be the first choice. As there are many government job opportunities in Mechanical Engineering as compared to aerospace engineering.
But since you have interest in aerospace, it is also a good feild but the current market situation and iiest shibpur placements record in not that good. As if you do not get placed in a core company you have no chance to work on your interest. If you want to M.Tech, MS & research in this feild then only it is recommended to get in this feild.
I would recommend you to go with Mechanical in NIT.
Hello Anil, there are a number of government colleges offering aerospace engineering course. Some of the top colleges are:

We cannot expect much scope as there are hardly any private companies(ex:- Team Indus). Though there are government run companies such as ISRO,DRDO,HAL.But, getting into these companies is a bit challenging as best of best get into such companies.
