Direct admission is only possible in two ways, either you have good marks in 12th board and the other way is through donation. There are some colleges under IP university which have reserved seats for management quota.

The cutoffs across all the IIMs vary. For example the older and reputed IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta have  a very high cutoff -higher than the others. The newer IIMs have a lower cutoff. 

I would suggest you to take a look at the IIM Cutoff

To start preparation from the first year Graduation will help you focus on the basic concepts & In first two years of engineering you are new to subjects and you need time to cope up with the concepts. Coming to third year you will be familiar with the engineering concepts
