Hello,
You can absolutely change the major for your masters. If you want a masters degree in Mechanical engineering with a bachelors in Industrial design, it is absolutely possible. You will have to appear for GATE Mechanical engineering.

According to the official website of IIT Madras, the first year B.Tech students of all branches will have an orientation session on 23rd July. Their classes will commence on 29th July. Since you have another 3 weeks before class starts I would suggest you to learn C programming

LPU is better than any other University. Being an alumnus of LPU I would prefer LPU as it has helped me grow professionally and provides exposure to various opportunities in terms of internships, workshops, guest lectures, industrial visits, placements etc.
