Hello Aspirant you can use any book. Personally telling I use to read arihant instead of NCERT. I use to read the summary part first and then all the questions (short and long type).
And it helped me a lot . It helped me getting 90+ marks in my English subject.

As you have mentioned you forget to book a slot in the mentioned timeframe. Don't worry, the default slots and centre which are empty with some bookings are alloted for such conditions. You can login to the portal to check your current status and to know the slot that is being booked by the system for you.
