what is the genetically engineered insulin.?

Abhishek Khurana 3rd Oct, 2020

Hello Student

Genetically Engineered Insulin is made when we take out the gene for insulin from our chromosome and also take out the plasmid from a bacterium preferably E.coli and insert the gene in it and when we culture the bacterium in Fermentors we get insulin which is made in other organisms so it is called as genetically engineered insulin .

But practically  this Genetically Engineered Insulin is non functional as it gets a C-Peptide along with it. So to overcome it an american company called as ELI -LILY made artifical sequence of the A and B chain of the insulin and joined them via disulphide linkages.

Thank You
