Yes , you should give prep time of 1 year or 6 months to cmat if you want a good college from cmat for mba and you should study sincerely for almots 7-8 hr a day self study and give mock test every weekend to improve your accuracy and speed

This year CMAT has already been conducted in January and it's conducted once in a year by AICTE on the behalf of several Management colleges. So you can get to appear for the exam next year only in January but its application form is available from November onwards.
