Yes, you need to prepare the current affairs because they may ask you as a general term and they also see how well aware you toward your subject. My suggestion is you may give at least some time for a current affair.

There is not much difference in academic area of both course.. only difference is regular students will get Government scholarship for every semester also less college fee AND for self supporting you will not get any scholarship except Scheduled caste students also higher college fee than regular or normal course.
