Can I directly take admission in IIM Lucknow without appearing in any of the competitive exams like CAT MAT etc.

Narendra Ranawat 26th Mar, 2025

No, you cannot directly take admission in IIM Lucknow without appearing for competitive exams like the CAT (Common Admission Test). Admission to IIM Lucknow is contingent upon candidates qualifying for the CAT, which is a national-level entrance exam.

The admission process involves several steps:

  • CAT Requirement : All candidates must take and qualify the CAT exam to be considered for admission. The CAT score is a fundamental criterion for shortlisting candidates.

  • Shortlisting for Interviews : After the CAT results are announced, candidates are shortlisted based on their scores, along with other factors such as academic performance and work experience. Shortlisted candidates then proceed to the next stages of the selection process.

  • Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) : Candidates who are shortlisted must also participate in a Written Ability Test followed by a Personal Interview as part of the final selection process.

In summary, there are no direct admission pathways into IIM Lucknow without taking the CAT or fulfilling its admission criteria

I am from SC category.. Graduated in bachelor in veterinary science.. I have average academic profile... How much should i score to get FABM and ABM of IIMA and IIML.... As i have graduation in allied agriculture so will it hamper my chances?

Vemireddy Rushita Student Expert 15th Oct, 2019

Hello Aspirant,

As you have mentioned that you belong to SC category, you should have a minimum of 60 percent and above to make it into any of the above mentioned colleges. Therefore make sure to get this percent. The course that you have already persued might not add up as your advantage since it is not related to the field you are applying.

Good luck!

While all IIMs offer some great courses, a good idea is to enroll for a course that gives you the best of both worlds - IIM alumni status and short career relevant course. The IIM Lucknow course  (https://www.mileseducation.com/analytics) by Wiley is a great example of leadership in business course for management professionals.

Another course is the IIML WileyNXT Analytics course  (https://www.mileseducation.com/finance/iim-lucknow-analytics) for finance and accounting professionals.

You can choose any of these courses along with the Wiley certified business analyst certification (https://www.mileseducation.com/analytics/WCBA) .

What are my chances of getting into top IIMs or the new IIMs. I have 97% in Xth, 93% in XIIth and 59% in UG. Is my UG percent a reason for concern? Except A,B what all IIMs do I have a chance at?

Miles Education 21st Nov, 2019

Getting into IIMs has always been competitive however that has been the case for the general PG course which is based on CAT scores and subsequent WAT and PI. However in recent times IIMs have realized that specialization is the need of the hour. This is result of diverse adoption of technology expertise across industries which has led to tech knowledge becoming the primary driver of performance. What this has led the IIMs to do is partner up with academic partners to develop specialized courses specific to industries. For example, the IIM analytics courses  (https://mileseducation.com/analytics/home) by IIM Lucknow are developed together with Wiley innovation council and IIM faculty. Further these courses are customized for business leaders who have the IIM business and data analytics course (https://mileseducation.com/analytics/IIM-Lucknow) while there is another custom Analytics course for finance and accounting professionals (https://mileseducation.com/finance/IIM-Lucknow-Analytics) . Since these courses are exclusively designed for an industry, the enrollments do not see the generic competition based on CAT scores. You can check your eligibility (https://mileseducation.com/analytics/home) and apply for enrollment.

Interestingly these courses give you the IIM Lucknow alumni status as well.

All the best.

If I have 6 years gap after B.Tech from UPTU but I score 99% percentile in CAT 2019. Will I get admission in IIM Lucknow?

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 20th Aug, 2019
Dear Himanshu, you haven't mentioned your Category. Neverthless, IIM Lucknow has a 3 stage Selection process; Written Ability Test, Personal Interview and Final Selection. Candidates will be shortlisted based on CAT score, Academic performance and other Criteria. You havent mentioned if you have been working for the past 6 years because PGP-SM course prefers a minimum of 24 months as  working experience.  In 2018, the percentile cut offs have been as follows:
                              QA                DLR            VARC        Overall
General               85                  85                 85                90
NC-OBC              77                  77                 77                82
SC                        55                  55                 55                70
ST                        50                  50                  50               65
PwD                    50                  50                  50                65

For being shortlisted for Written Ability Test and Personal Interview, the following chart is followed on a composite score of 100:
Scaled CAT Score:                                   60
12th marks:                                              10
Graduation:                                              10
Work Experience:                                   10
Diversity Factor for Academics:           5
Diversiry Factor for Gender:                  5

Method of scoring can be found on the official website. Those candidates who are eligible after these 2 roumds are called for Written Ability and Personal Interview Test. The final score is calculated based on this scale:

  • Common Admission Test:  30
  • Academic Performance (12th  + Graduation): 5+5
  • Diversity Factor (DF academics +DF gender): 5
  • Work Experience: 5
  • Writing Ability Test: 10
  • Personal Interview: 40
  • Final Score: 100

The minimum marks that you need to score in Personal Interview are 12 out of 40. Considering all this, if you score 99% in CAT, you will be eligible for further rounds. And you should score good in every round of interview to really get into IIM Lucknow.
