Considering you in OBC category you can't get good NITs. Least preferred branch in North Eastern NITs are the most probable chances for you.

It depends very much on your preparation .There are many students who score well in mains and at the time Advance they loose focus and loose IIT.

So i suggest to prepare well previous paper and sample paper.Take mock test as much as possible.

Is it worth dropping a year for IIT preparation?is it true that most ppl who get in to IIT are people who take am extra year,?

Well it is all worth it only when you want to take  a drop and you have mentaly prepared yourself to give everything you have for an year.

I've seen people with rank of 2k but still dropping and getting a rank of under 50 in their next attempt.

But regarding salaries, the highest mechanical engineer salary was reported to be 123,546  in 2015. The lowest starting salary for a recently graduated young mechanical engineer in the same year was 53,000 .

BItS pilani is a reputed college. difference between IIT and BITS is only name. both are tier 1 college. so if you have interest in chemistry and want to do chemical engineering then go for it. if not then try to get your prefered branch in other colleges. your last
