I am BDS graduate with 2 years of experience, am i eligible for iit JAM? or CSIR- NET? If so, which would be better?

Prachi Kumari 24th Jul, 2024

Hello,

As a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) graduate with 2 years of experience, you may have some eligibility considerations for IIT JAM and CSIR-NET. Here’s an overview of each and their relevance to your background:

IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.)

  • Eligibility:

    • Educational Qualification: Typically, IIT JAM is designed for students with a background in science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. It is primarily for admission to M.Sc. programs and other post-graduate programs in science at IITs and other participating institutions.
    • Graduation Degree: A BDS degree, being a professional degree in the field of dentistry, generally does not align with the typical science-based eligibility criteria for IIT JAM.
  • Relevance:

    • Given that IIT JAM focuses on science disciplines and your background is in dentistry, it might not be the most relevant option for you.

CSIR-NET (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - National Eligibility Test)

  • Eligibility:

    • Educational Qualification: CSIR-NET is aimed at candidates with a background in science for eligibility in junior research fellowships (JRF) and lectureship positions. Common fields include Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences.
    • Graduation Degree: A BDS degree is not typically listed among the standard qualifications for CSIR-NET. However, if you have a strong interest in life sciences or a related field and have pursued additional qualifications or research in that area, it could be worth exploring.
  • Relevance:

    • While CSIR-NET primarily targets candidates with degrees in traditional science disciplines, if you have a keen interest in life sciences or related research areas, you might consider it. Additional coursework or research experience in relevant areas would be beneficial.

Which is Better for You?

  • CSIR-NET might be more relevant if you are interested in research or academic positions in scientific fields and have additional qualifications or research experience in a relevant area. If you’re considering a shift to a research or academic career in science, CSIR-NET could be a viable option.

  • IIT JAM would generally be less applicable given your background, as it is focused on science graduates and is more suited to those pursuing M.Sc. programs in scientific disciplines.

Hope it helps you!

General Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Educational Qualification:

    • The degree should be in a relevant discipline for the subject they are applying for. However, for Chemistry (CY), having a degree in B.Sc. IT might be acceptable if the candidate has studied chemistry courses as part of their curriculum.
  2. Minimum Marks:

    • Candidates must have secured at least 55% marks or 5.5 out of 10 CGPA (for General/OBC-NCL/EWS category) and 50% marks or 5.0 out of 10 CGPA (for SC/ST/PwD category) in their qualifying degree.
  3. Specific Requirements for Chemistry:

    • Candidates should have studied Chemistry for at least two years/four semesters during their undergraduate studies.

i have 2700 rank in iit jam. i am from ews category. can i get admission into msc chemistry in any NITs ?

sadafreen356 18th Dec, 2024

With a 2700 rank in IIT JAM EWS category, you have a good chance of getting admission into an MSc Chemistry program at several NITs like NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela, NIT Patna, etc.

as the admission process for NITs mostly happens through the centralized counselling process (CCMN) based on your JAM score, and your EWS category will provide you with a significant advantage in terms of cut-offs; however, the specific NITs you can get into will depend on the individual institute's cut-offs and the overall competition for that year.

During counselling, carefully select the NITs based on your rank and preferred specializations.

Hope you have great life ahead...

I am studying graduation in geography now from university of calcutta. Can I apply IIT jam for geology ?

Nitin Kumar 8th Jun, 2024

No, based on the eligibility criteria, you wouldn't be eligible to apply for the IIT JAM program in Geology with a graduation degree in Geography from the University of Calcutta.

The minimum qualification for the JAM Geology (GG) program typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field for three years/six semesters. While Geography is a related field in terms of studying the Earth, it focuses more on human-environment interactions and social aspects, differing from the focus of Geology on the Earth's physical structure and processes.

The JAM Geology program delves into subjects like Petrology, Mineralogy, Paleontology, which require a strong foundation in the core principles of Geology. A Geography degree might not have covered these specific areas in sufficient depth

Several universities offer Master's programs in Geography with specializations like Environmental Geography, Resource Management, etc. These programs might be a good fit considering your background. Some universities offer integrated M.Sc. programs in Geology or Earth Sciences. These five-year programs are designed for students who haven't studied Geology at the undergraduate level.

I am now doing graduation on geography from university of calcutta. My general subjects are economics and sociology. Can I apply for jam IIT for geology?

Nitin Kumar 31st May, 2024

Based on the information available for IIT JAM 2024, applying for Geology with a Geography degree from Calcutta University might be difficult.  IIT JAM requires candidates to have a Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field for three years/six semesters. This could include subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences alongside Geology courses.

Your graduation is in Geography, a distinct field from Geology. While there might be some overlap, it likely wouldn't fulfill the specific Geology course requirement for JAM.
