18312 is a pretty good rank if your son wants admission in NIT's or a good B.Tech college. Students within the first 20000 ranks get good colleges according to previous years trends.

First of all I hope you know that preparatory rank doesn’t mean a rank in JEE Advanced. You’re not alloted a rank in JEE Advanced Rank List.The vacant seats reserved for SC, ST and PwD candidates, which don’t get filled in the counselling will be allotted to the candidates
In 757 sc rank there is very good possibilities to get top 7 iits. You can get textile, production, metallurgical branches in top 7 iits, so it is very good.
