You can take admission in any branch through lateral entry.Few college such as IITs NITs does not allow lateral entry but you can apply for DTU,SRM.Your marks should be more than 60 percent in diploma for taking admission through lateral entry.

There are nothing such as different streams but some of the sub disiplines are Tissue engineering,Biomedical imaging,Bio instrumentation,Bio mechanism,Bio medical imaging.

The admission are done through Gate and few colleges have their private exam.

As of now gate in not offered in biomedical engineering. It is better for the students of biomedical to choose the subjects such as instrumentation engineering and electronics and communication engineering for giving away the gate exam.
