My gate score 2020 is 608 at 338 rank in life science. What are the chances of getting M.tech seat in biomedical engg. or biotech in IITs.

Maria Sunny 20th Mar, 2020

Hello,

GATE cutoff for IITs and NITs vary every year. The cut off marks according to GATE 2019 for Biotechnology is given below :

IIT Kharagpur :

General - 713.1 , SC /ST - 499.5 , OBC - 524.2

IIT Guwahati :

General - 601 , SC/ST - 354 , OBC - 459

You do have a chance in IIT Kharagpur and IIT Guwahati for Biotechnology. But in the case of Biomedical Engineering , GATE score>= 625 (General )is required for candidates who have an MSc or equivalent in Life Sciences. For candidates belonging to EWS and OBC NCL category GATE score >= 575 is required and for SC/ST or PH candidates GATE score >= 500 is required. These cut offs are based on short listing criteria for GATE 2019.

I got 28.7 marks in gate 2020 in Life Science paper. I enroll for General category by mistake but having obc certificate. What to do now.? Please help.

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 13th Mar, 2020

Once you filled in an application form and the correction window has been closed, you cannot make any changes to the Category or any details. You need to appear for Counselling with the same details that you filled in the application form. No changes or requests to make changes will be entertained. So you will have to appear for Counselling only through General Category and not OBC Category.

which one is better for high salary jobs, biotechnology or life science.

Fareeha 11th Mar, 2020

Hey there!

Life Science is a field and Biotechnology is a course within that field .

So, if you major in Biotechnology, you are majoring in a subject from the field of Life Sciences. And the jobs depends on what interest do you hold.

Majoring in a subject in the field of Life Sciences, opens the gates of research work and gives you an advantage of becoming a scientist. Though it may not be the highest paying job, it still pays good. Plus, there is a huge demand of people specializing in any subject in the life science field.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
