This is very good to know that you are so serious about your Gate preparation but as per my view it is better to start your preparation in your 3rd year because first 2 years of B.Tech is the ideal time to make all your basics concept clear and strong.

NIT Surat is one of the top most NIT. Score varies almost every year and differs from one branch to another, Considering general category, 235+ score is enough to admit in NIT Surat. For OBC students, There is slightly less score to need like 200+ and 160+ score

If you are aiming for CSE at NIT TRICHY and not having home state advantage then you need to score around 280 plus in JEE MAIN.

It depends on your interest after B.tech in Mechanical Engineering you can go for  M.tech with given below branches

M.tech courses for GATE (ME) students:

1-Mechatronics engineering

2-Robotics

3-Mechanical engineering (all specialized fields, design, thermal, production, material science etc)
