Assuming you are from General Category, to secure Mechanical Engineering at some of the Good NITs as well as GFTIs like PEC, IIEST or BIT Mesra, you need to target a CRL of atleast 35k in JEE Main. For CRL 30-40k, the corresponding percentile range is anywhere between 96.5-97, which should be your first target.

hello aspirant,
As you did not mention your category considering you from GEN category, and you did not mention your state domicle so considering other state quota for nits ,you have fair chances to fetch seat in mechanical engineering branch like nit agartala, nit meghalaya, nit nagaland, nit sikkim, nit arunachal pradesh, nit manipur, nit srinagar, nit andhrapdesh.
your rank would be around 40k and the above mentioned cutoffs for last year closing ranks round 6 the ranks are similar.so with 96 percentile you have few chances to fetch seat.now remember each year the cutoff changes and if it change so are your chances into colleges.for more informtion to get a personalised report on what all choices you have for your rank refer to: https://engineering.careers360.com/jee-main-college-predictor
hope this helps,
thankyou.

Dear Student,
The transfer from one stream to another stream can be done with a very good result in your first year told by the management and the university. But if you want to change the stream and college both then you must need a very good score too and also you have to write a application to the university, it can be only done if both the colleges are under the university. Otherwise you have to do all the things from the beginning. So talk to your college management authority.
Thank you.
Hello Dear,
Yes the chances of getting Mechanical Engineering branch in any NIT is high but wait for the official cutoff. On this marks your percentile must be between 98.7- 99 and general rank between 11678 - 9302 . Your chances of getting NIT or other government college in your desired branch is high Although you have not mentioned the category in which you applied. But as you know the cutoff changes every years because it depends upon the number of seats available, the difficulty level of paper and number of candidates writing the examination hence varies every year depending on these factors. It also depends on home state and other state as you have not mentioned your home state. You can check out your rank on the basis of your score from the below link.

I would recommend that you should wait for the official declaration of the cutoff rank. Meanwhile you can check the below link to know about previous years cutoff trend.
Good Luck
