If we consider the past year cutoff for general category students in mechanical engineering Domain, we get to know that the cutoff's are around 500+ and it is difficult to find a seat in old iits but there are new iits where you might get a seat.

As per the academics and faculty IIT Madras is considered to be the best institute to pursue any course of Mechanical Engineering. If we see facilities and the labs IIT Kharagpur comes out to be the best. As, both are IIT's it does not matters a lot.

see candidates from any stream can write gate xe paper and it is easy to crack than other core subjects like mechanical, ece, electrical, however for iit or nits, you can not apply for mtech core stream courses through gate xe paper, but you may apply for mtech courses
