I wanted to go in merchant Navy profession what should I do

Hi Shren!

They are various Courses through which you can get inside Merchant Navy like Bachelor Courses, Diploma Courses, 6-Months Courses, PG Courses, etc,.

The Eligibility Criteria for the Bachelor Course is PCM with 60% aggregate Score. The maximum age limit is 25 years.

Some of the Entrance Exams for Bachelor's Degree are given below:

  • IMU CET
  • JEE Advanced
  • MERI Entrance Exam
  • TMI SAT

Some of the Universities are:

  • Ganpat University, Mehsana.
  • IIT Kharagpur.
  • IIT Chennai.
  • VELS Univeristy, Chennai.
  • Andhra University, Vishakapatnam.
  • IMU Chennai.
  • TNU Kolkata.

From this, you can get yourself an admission in any of their Colleges!

Merchant navy is a fleet of ships that is responsible for transporting heavy goods from one country to another. It is one of the essential parts of international trade as most of the import and export are done through ships.

A career in Merchant Navy can be most beneficial if you are looking for lucrative jobs. This field can be joined through different courses depending on the preference of the candidate. There are three modes of entry into the field varying depending on the courses that one seeks.

For diploma course in merchant Navy the candidate must have passed STD xii board from any recognized University with minimum 60% marks in PCM.

You can join 6 months merchant navy course after class x with English ,maths and science as major subjects. You must secure minimum 40% .

Dear Student,

The criteria for admission in Marchant Navy are:

  • For bachelor Marchant Navy courses, the candidate must have to complete 12th from Science stream with the subject combination of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • The minimum marks required for this is 60%.
  • The minimum age required for this is in between 17 to 25 years.

So, it is difficult for you to get a chance with this result.

hello this is sachin Kumar Sharma i passed with 57% in pcm and in English with 61% Im belong to st category now Im preparing for diploma in mechanical engineering can i join merchant Navy with it. please reply me because my dream is merchant Navy

Dear student,

The eligibility criteria for merchant navy is as follows for diploma courses:

  • You should not be over the age of 25 - 28 years.

  • You must have passed 10+2 level of examination with PCM and English as compulsory subjects if you belong to one year diploma courses.

  • If you belong to two-year diploma courses, you should have passed with at least 50 per cent marks.

Since there is no criteria for minimum marks in class 12th, so if you have scored according to the eligibility criteria mentioned above then you will be eligible for merchant navy.

Merchant Navy is a very hectic and physically challenging job which also offers various rewards at it is a high risking job affair.

You can either join merchant Navy from various entrance examination conducted after class 12th such as Indian Maritime University exam, JEE ADVANCED and others or pursue it after completing your graduation from stream such as- Mechanical, Naval architecture, and Electrical.

  • attempt popular entrance examinations  to become a merchant navy officer like: Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test, Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training Online Entrance Test, Tolani Maritime Institute- Birla Institute of Technology and Science Entrance Examination
  • opt for a bachelor’s degree programme in related specialization.
  • Once the bachelor's degree is completed the student can either begin working in the field of merchant navy at an entry-level post or The candidate can go for his or her master’s degree programme in the specializations related to merchant navy.

First, Merchant Navy is a rudimentary term where your role, income, ships everything varies from Company to Company.

You got to remember few points before joining Merchant Navy:

  • You have to be separated from your family.
  • You have to work day and night because the shift changes every time.

Is IMU-CET compulsory for Merchant navy

Hello aspirant,

Many private colleges also offer Marine Courses and for the admission they conduct their own entrance exam. Other Entrance Exams are TMISAT, JEE Advanced, WBJEE, CUSAT CAT.

There are total seven institutes which offers the merchant navy courses listed below.

This procedure was there when  one of my seniors went .

First he gave the exam then the result came and  ,then there was an interview followed by a medical check up .
