Yes it is necessary to have the knowledge of English for merchant navy. Candidate who is applying for Merchant Navy should have good English and he/she should have proficiency in speaking English. Good use of words while speaking to your crew members , to your interviewer will present your good image in front of them and they will hire you for their training programs and as a officer on ships. In Merchant Navy you have to work all over the globe , you have to move from one country to another country . So English will be very useful for you to communicate with other groups of different countries and helpful in exporting and importing the products.

To get into merchant navy first you have to have the done your class 12 with PCM subjects with atleast 55% to 70% depending on different colleges.
There are three ways to get admission in merchant Navy:
1. Through entrance test and merit:
IMU CET
JEE ADVANCED
MERI entrance exam
TMISAT
These are few of the test you can clear to get admission in technical field of merchant navy. Many college also take admission on class 12 exam result.
2. Through Sponsorship:
The sponsorship to go on a ship will be provided to you by the company through which you apply only if you have completed a course at their institute. You can also apply for multiple sponsorships at different companies.
3. Through lateral entry:
If you have done engineering in mechanical or electrical branch in the first year with 60% marks then you can apply for lateral entry.
Or if you have done diploma in mechanical or electrical ,marine or ship building engineering with 60% marks you can apply

as per your qualification you can be hired as a head cook, however you need to apply for different companies as far as you meet the eligibility criteria. you may also apply to different cruise company, salaries are same as a 5 star hotel, after you gain 2-3 years experience by hard working , you may expect salary more than of five star hotels chief.
