i want to know about career 8n merchant navy

Karam Vir 15th Jul, 2021

Hey,

A merchant naval officer's role is to look after the country's commercial shipping. Deck officers, engineers, and ratings are all positions available in the merchant navy. Each of them plays a particular role in ensuring that the cargo is safely carried from one location to another.

Students must have completed 10+2 in physics, chemistry, and mathematics from a recognised board with an aggregate of 50% or equivalent. To work in the merchant navy, you must first complete a bachelor's degree programme in a related field such as offshore engineering, naval engineering, or marine engineering. Moreover, a Masters degree/internships can also be helpful.

The merchant navy has a lot of potential. Because shipping businesses handle the majority of import-export, there will always be a demand for merchant naval personnel. In the merchant fleet, the starting pay is very attractive. In the merchant navy, there is a lot of room for advancement. The marine industry's private sector has billions invested in it. The average salary can lie anywhere between INR 5-6 Lakhs and can vary with the company a person is associated with and the job position.

If you have done Hotel management, better try in cruise ship, there you can have better career instead of staying jobless after completing DNS or BSC nautical science.

Before joining company will ask you to do dome STCW course which is mandatory for all wjo works at sea

The only suitable field in the Merchant marine for you to join would be the galley side, most companies may take you as a cook or you may need to do bsc in Maritime catering .

As a chief cook in merchant navy, you will be earning more than the average package provided by most of the hotels.

Imp info:

  1. Age limit : 18 to 25 yrs

are private colleges better in placement in merchant navy?

Anushri Varshney 8th Jul, 2021

Hello Aspirant,

No college offers 100% placements. It is just the skills that support the placement and jobs.

Private colleges at also better but I would suggest you join some Training Institute run by the companies themselves rather than going for private/government colleges. I've enlisted some institutes from which you can take training. These are:

  • Anglo-Eastern
  • Fleet Management
  • Wallem Institute
  • ESM institute

These institutes have their training programs which help in the merchant navy jobs.

But you need to work on yourself first for the placement.

I hope this helps you.

I have passed my 12th with PCB from state board, i really want to join merchant navy so if i give maths exam from NIOS (on demand exam ) then good companies will sponser me or changing subject will create troubling situation?

Shweta Goel 8th Jul, 2021

Hello student,

It is not possible to give 12th exam twice from the same board when you have already got passing marks. Only the students who fail, are allowed to re appear for 12th exams.

In order to repeat 12th, you have to opt for some other state board, do your 12th with mathematics and physics and then apply for NDA to get admission in merchant Navy. But remember the age limit for NDA to apply is 16.5 to 19.5. I hope you don't exceed the limit till then.

I hope this information helps you.

Here is all you need to know about NDA.

I completed 10th this year amd taking PCMB for 10+2 .Can I take arts for my graduation if I want to be a Merchant Navy Deck officer?

Akash Singh 5th Jul, 2021

Dear Kirti,

If you have want to be Merchant Navy Deck officer then you have to pursue bachelor’s degree in nautical science (B.Sc. – Nautical Science) which is a three year course.

So you have to opt for this course rather than doing graduation in arts. With this you have to fulfil the educational qualifications too which below I am mentioning.

  • The student must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with atleast 60% marks and 50% in English from a recognized board.
  • The age of the candidate should be less than 25 years old.

I hope this information helps you.
