The NIRF instituted 'India Rankings 2021' was released by Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday in New Delhi. Among the universities in India, NU was ranked in the 151-200 band, slipping from the 101-150 band it managed in both 2020 and 2019.The college offers a BTech programme in six specialisations. NIT Nagaland offers BTech, MTech, MSc, and PhD in Engineering and Science. Admission to most of the academic programmes is entrance based.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland was established in 2010. NIT Nagaland, an Institute of National importance is a higher education technical institute, is one among the ten newly approved NITs by the Government of India in 2009 under the 11th Five Year Plan. The institute started functioning from the academic year 2010. The institute is spread over 291 acres. It aims to advance knowledge through quality education and research, to cultivate invention, and to educate students for a life of professional achievement, service to society, and moving our world towards a more sustainable path.
Meanwhile , in the engineering section, while almost all institutions under the NIT featured in top 200 band , NIT Nagaland failed to make to the 300 lit.
NIT Nagaland's best performance so far has been in 2017 when it was ranked 151-200 in engineering category.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions. NIRF ranking system is done on taking ito account different parameters like quality of education, research output, graduation outcome, average packages offered during placements, campus facilities, outreach, inclusivity etc. So sometimes there might be a case when a private college is ranked better than a govt. college.
