NPTEL generally  happens twice a year once during the summer and the other during the winter. If you have failed this time you will not be given  a certificate for the subject, however you will be able to take it up again in the next season. The choice is given to you, you can either take up the same subject or you can opt for another subject as well.

Yes, NPTEL course is open to everyone. So you can register for Swayam or NPTEL even if you are in first year of course. NPTEL courses are free to register and the subjects are taught by renowned professors of seven IITs and IISc. Courses are done on week basis- 8 weeks course, 10 weeks and 12 weeks. Online classes are done regularly and weekly assignment is given. There is no registration fee for NPTEL or SWAYAM courses. You only have to pay for the examination fee if you wish to appear for the exam. The examination fee is around INR 1000 to 1200, depends on the program. The final result is given on the basis of score obtained in weekly assignments and online examination and Coding exams (not for all courses). If you qualify, a laminated certificate will be sent at your home through Post. NPTEL is one of the platforms where you can earn new skills from your home. You can register for more than one course at a time.
