Both are Private universities however SRM edges out slightly higher on aspects like ranking, campus, infrastructure, placement etc.
Both are excellent choices for pursuing engineering, and there is no comparison on that point.

It is necessary to appear for the exam if the course you opt for demands for it. But you can try approaching the University (whichever branch you prefer) in person and enquiring for the details. As that might work in special cases.
