is it better to get a seat in AIIMS Delhi or is it better to crack usmle exam?

Moumoyee Chakraborty 28th Mar, 2022

Hello Aspirant

United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a test for medical graduates who want to practice medicine in the USA. The screening test is conducted in three stages- Step 1, Step 2(Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Sciences) and Step 3. Conducted by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the test is taken by those who want to pursue Residency programmes in USA.

AIIMS New Delhi was established in the year 1956 as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament.  AIIMS Delhi has collaborated with various academic institutions such as Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Michigan in the USA; University College London, Australia’s Deakin University, Monash University, George Institute of Global Health, Cologne University Germany, Erasmus University, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Delhi. The faculty strength at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi is 661 whereas the total student enrollment is 2841. Various UG, PG and doctoral courses are offered by the institute in the streams of medicine and allied sciences, sciences, pharmacy, arts, humanities and social sciences. As per NIRF rankings 2021, AIIMS Delhi has secured rank one in the medical category and 8th position in the research category.

As per the comparison only if you have interest to study abroad you can opt for this option, otherwise an opportunity to study at AIIMS will be a much better one over the other.

I m 1st year mbbs student in kazakhastan so when should i start my usmle preparation and can i crack it, even suggest me some resources to refer

piyush singh 16th Jan, 2022

Hello Aspirant ,

You should start your preparation as soon as possible( you can enjoy your first year and start preparing from 2 year ) for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination )  just be regular and give 2-3 hours every day and you will surely be able to crack this exam.

There are plenty of resource for UMSLE online ,join forums  and contact your teachers and seniors for any type of help. First aid books are your one stop destination for this exam , they have books for every topic , Uworld Qbank is also very good resource .You should also try solving previous years question , and look onto YouTube for any topic you are finding hard understanding .

Hope this helps.

is it compulsory give usmle step1 during 2nd year of mbbs in india can we give it after completion of mbbs, if yes then how time does it take for complete procedure?

Karishma Sawhney 12th Dec, 2021

Hi Smriti. To give USMLE, a student must be in or a graduate of a medical university which should be listed in World Directory of Medical Schools.

No, it is not compulsory to give USMLE step 1 after completion of 1st year. However, students prefer to give it this way as STEP 1 syllabus consists of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology- subjects which constitute a huge part of 1st year and also 2nd year syllabus. Hence, it will be less work load for STEP 2 and STEP 3 and not much time is needed for revision as you have studied the subjects the last year itself. However, these steps can be taken in any order.

STEP 1 and 2 can be taken in India, but STEP 3 has to be given in the US. So, it completely depends on you, your method of preparation. If you decide to give it after completion of your MBBS, and you take time off for preparation (all the 3 steps) it will take approximately 6 months-1 year. The overall budget should be 10-20 lakh. Good luck!
