With 422 marks in 12th board exam, your estimated TNEA cutoff would likely be around 140 to 150 out of 200, depending on your subject-wise scores. This is not high enough for top branches like CSE or ECE in top-tier government colleges like CEG or MIT.
If you belong to a reserved category such as BC, MBC, SC, or ST, you may get chances in government colleges for branches like Civil, Mechanical, or EEE in tier-2 or tier-3 government engineering colleges, especially in districts like Theni, Dharmapuri, Virudhunagar, or Sivaganga.
Chances are better in government-aided or self-financing colleges under government quota. You should definitely participate in TNEA counselling and fill as many options as possible across multiple districts to improve your chances.
Yes, you can apply for a Ph.D. even if you haven’t done M.Phil.
As per the latest UGC guidelines, M.Phil. is no longer mandatory. You just need a Master’s degree in a relevant field with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories).
You’ll either need to clear the university’s Ph.D. entrance exam or have a valid score in exams like UGC NET, CSIR NET, or GATE. If you’ve cleared NET/JRF, most universities will exempt you from the entrance test and move you straight to the interview round.
