The Constitution of India came into force on 26th Jan1950. It was the day when the Indian constitution was proposed in Indian parliament. 26th Jan was chosen as the Republic day becausei was on this day in 1929 when Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.
