A car is standing 200m behind a bud , which is also at rest. The two start moving at same instant but with different forward accelerations. The bus has acceleration 2m/s2 and car has acceleration 4m/s2. At what time the car will catch the bus?
Let time be t.
For bus:
Initial velocity (u) = 0
Acceleration (a) = 2m/s²
Distance covered (S1) = ut+ 0.5 at²
= 0.5 x 2 x t²
= t²
For car:
Initial velocity (u) = 0
Acceleration (a) = 4m/s²
Distance covered (S2) = ut+ 0.5 at²
= 0.5 x 4 x t²
= 2t²
According to the question,
S2 = S1+200
2t² = t²+200
=> t² = 200
=> t = √200 s
= 14.14 seconds
