Correct Answer: 19 days
Solution :
Given: A is 1.5 times as efficient as B.
A takes 8 days less than B to complete a work.
A and B work on alternate days, starting with A.
Let the days taken by B to complete the work be $x$.
So, days taken by A to complete the work = $(x-8)$
According to the question,
$\frac{1}{x-8}=1.5(\frac{1}{x})$
⇒ $x=1.5\times(x-8)$
⇒ $0.5x=12$
⇒ $x=24$
So, efficiency of B $=\frac{1}{24}$
Efficiency of A $=\frac{1}{16}$
Work done by A and B alternately in 2 days $=\frac{1}{24}+\frac{1}{16}=\frac{5}{48}$
So, work done in 18 days $=9\times\frac{5}{48}=\frac{15}{16}$
Work left after 18 days $=1-\frac{15}{16}=\frac{1}{16}$
Since A will work on the 19
th
day and complete the remaining work.
So, total days = 18 + 1 = 19 days
Hence, the correct answer is 19 days.
