Question : A pump can fill a tank with water in 1 hour. Because of a leak, it took $1 \frac{1}{3}$ hours to fill the tank. In how many hours can the leak alone drain all the water in the tank when it is full?
Option 1: 5
Option 2: 1
Option 3: 2
Option 4: 4
Correct Answer: 4
Solution :
Time taken by the pump to fill the tank = 1 hour
Part of the tank filled by a pump in an hour = 1
Let $x$ be the time taken by the leak alone to drain the tank.
Part of tank drained by the leak in an hour = $\frac{1}{x}$
Time taken by the pump to fill the tank along with the leak = $1 \frac{1}{3}$ = $\frac{4}{3}$
Part of tank filled by the pump along with the leak = $\frac{3}{4}$
So, $1-\frac{1}{x}=\frac{3}{4}$
⇒ $\frac{1}{x}=1-\frac{3}{4} = \frac{1}{4}$
$\therefore x=4$ hours
Hence, the correct answer is 4.
