Correct Answer: 500 metres
Solution :
Let the distance covered by the thief be $x$ km.
Equating the time taken by both,
$\frac{x}{5}=\frac{x+0.4}{9}$
⇒ $\frac{x}{5}–\frac{x}{9}=\frac{4}{90}$
⇒ $\frac{9x–5x}{45}=\frac{2}{45}$
⇒ $4x=\frac{2×45}{45}$
⇒ $x=\frac{2}{4}$ = 0.5 km
Distance covered by the thief = 0.5×1000 = 500 metres
Hence, the correct answer is 500 metres.
