After successful completion in preparatory course in iit,how the branch would be alloted?Whether it will be based on my preference or not?

Once you complete one year of preparatory course, then you have to appear for an examination. This will only be the things taught in the one year of your preparatory course and no engineering related stuff. Based on your performance in this examination, you will be alloted a branch in your institute to pursue regular Btech degree.
