Companies usually short-list candidates based on the bio-data that you submit in response to a position that is advertised. Only of there is a large number of vacancies and equally large number of candidates do companies go for a written test. For example, the Delhi Metro conducts written tests.

Since your interest is in automobile engineering, watch out for advertisements from automobile majors like Maruti, Suzuki, Honda, Volkswagen etc.
