Can i earn 7 digit annual salary in indian rupee after graduating as chemical engineer?
Let me first point out my assumptions
1.) India produces roughly 15k Chemical Engineers every year. This assumption is based on the fact that number of GATE aspirants every year is around 15k. Although there are people who appear in GATE from previous batches but there are also people who don't write GATE at all. So a rough figure of Chemical Engineers getting their bachelors degree every year would be around 15k
2.) 30% of people graduating in chemical engineering leaves the field for good for different career (IT consultancy, Data Analytics, MBA, Govt jobs not related to Chemical Engg, UPSC and the likes)
3.) 40% of remaining chemical engineers get jobs.
4.) 65 % of the chemical engineers getting job earns around 40k p.m. The reason being reliance, which recruit a major chunk of chemical engineers, roughly pays around 40 k p.m. to non IITians. 25 % of those getting jobs earns around 20 k p.m. from the likes of Reddys labs, Ambhuja Cements etc. 7% of those getting jobs gets around 60 k p.m. (those who get govt or PSU.). Remaining 3% earns around 1.5 lakh p.m. at ITC, shell, Schlumberger and the likes.
5.) A fresher's age is 23 and he/she gets 10% increament of salary every year. Although 10 % is a very high number yet we can consider 10 % as many other chemical engineers who were unemployed as fresher get jobs (some complete mtech/ phd and become teachers etc). The retirement age is 60.
So number of chemical engineers who stays in chemical engg= (1-0.3)*15=10.5k
Number of chemical engg not getting jobs in the first year after graduating=(1-0.4)*10.5=6.3k (we will assign their earning as zero)
Number of chem engg earning 40K = 0.65*0.40*10.5=2.73k
Number of chem engg earning 20K = 0.25*0.40*10.5=1.05k
Number of chem engg earning 60K = 0.07*0.40*10.5=0.294k
Number of chem engg earning 1.5 lakh = .03*0.40*10.5=0.126k
Total earning of chemical engineering fresher =166.74 * 10^6
Therefore, Average earning of a fresher = (166.74*10^6)/(10.5K)=15880 INR
Now we want to get the time average income.
At age of 23 a chemical engg is earning 15880 p.m. His/hers total income that year will be 15880*12, for next year will be 15880*(1+10%)*12, the year after will be 15880*(1+10%)^2*12 and so on. Hence his net earning in his entire career of 37 years will be
=15880*12*(1+1.1+1.1^2+...+1.1^36)=62892324.6
So the time average income of a chemical engineer in his career will be = (62892324.6K)/(37*12)=141649.38 i.e. roughly equal to 1.5 lakh.
So the average income of a chemical engineer working (i.e. of age between 23-60) is around 1.5 lakh INR per month before tax. A chemical engineering fresher however, earns around 15880 that is around 16k INR per month on an average before tax.
P.S.- All estimates are applicable only for India
