You can sit for the JEE Main exam in the year you appeared for 12th board exams uptil two years after. For ex: If you gave your 12th boards in 2019, you can sit for JEE Main in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
According to the guidelines, JEE Main candidates can participate in the entrance exam for 3 consecutive years. The exam will be conducted twice a year, they may appear in both the attempts.
So yes, you can take a drop for the exams if you would be qualifying the eligibility criteria for the next year.
