With 56% marks in boards your friend is not eligible for NIT because the minimum eligibility for NIT is you have secured at least 75% marks in case of general or OBC category or 65% marks in case of SC ST in 12th exams. Having secured less than the category cutoff as mentioned above remove your candidature for NIT.
