No, it is not necessary to take admission in lateral entry. You can take admission by giving the entrance of the particular college, or through the score and rank of JEE. You may take admission as lateral entry also.
You may continue from 2nd year if you take admission by lateral entry. But if you don't give the lateral entry exam, then you will be starting from the 1st year in the college.
