The best time for preparation of gate exam is ending of second year. The gate exam is necessary because with the help of gate exam you can get good psu and you can also study Mtech or Phd. With the gate exam you will be able to get a job govt or private with ease. But you must have a good score around 60 plus so to pursue Mtech from iit or get any psu also you'll get a chance to get higher studies from a better institution.
