can you please tell me the admission date for civil engineering?and also i just like to know the fees structure and course details.
Hey Anand,
The date for admission into the course of civil engineering would vary from college to college. For knowing the correct date, you have to keep visiting the website of the respective college. They will put up notifications regarding the admission dates, closing, documents to be brought, date when classes commence etc. Generally, admissions start from around mid-week of march if the classes are to commence in June.
Fee structure.
The tuition fee for the course will also very according to the institution from which you are taking your degree. In government colleges, for merit seats the fees are at a lower rate say 20,000 a year or 40,000 maximum. This is not including the hostel fees or other such miscellaneous expenses. In government colleges, management seats and NRI quota seats are very expensive. For NRI seats the fee would be around 9,600 USD. Management seat would be 2-3 lakhs. In private colleges the fee would range from 2-6 lakhs an year, this is again subject to the college. They also admit students in the NRI and Management quota a higher fee than usual.
Course details
Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines in the world. Civil engineering, until a few decades back, was a much sought-after course among Indian students, but lately has been sidelined due to the software and IT boom. However, with the increasing need to develop and maintain India’s infrastructure, which is lagging in all aspects, this field is bouncing back strongly. The course structure is designed in such a way, that students learn theoretical and practical knowledge of different fields that are covered in the study of civil engineering. Course includes classroom lectures, practical, industry visit and summer internship.
In most of the engineering institutes, first year of every branch has common subjects. Second year onwards the specialization starts. Thus, the first-year courses are similar for everyone.
Career prospects
Presently, unlike IT and Software field, civil engineering industry does not have a large numbers of job openings.
In these cases, you will have to hunt for a core engineering job all by yourself through off-campus placements. The on-campus placements would also depend on the college. Government colleges usually have a higher rate of placement so as IITs and NITs. Creating strong professional networks, developing a great resume with stellar GPA and doing impressive projects and internships will help you secure a job in one of the core civil engineering companies.
Also, civil engineers find work not just in construction industry, but also in other industries such as oil and energy, transportation, petroleum, environmental, power and electric utilities, chemical etc where infrastructure projects and construction facilities are involved. Some students transition to software, consulting or banking as they feel that salary and growth prospects are better in these sectors.
These are some of the famous companies recruiting civil engineering graduates from top colleges.
Construction, Design, Transportation and Real Estate: L&T, Sobha developers Ltd, Maytas Infra Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji, Shimizu Corp, Jones Lang LaSalle, Jacobs Engineering, Alacriti Infosystems, TATA consulting engineers Ltd, Land Transport Authority etc
Oil and Energy, Power: Schlumberger, Technip, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd
Consulting: Atkins, ICRA etc.
The admissions for civil engineering will be based on score of JEE in most of top government as well as private colleges.
To participate in counselling and seat allotment of JEE Main 2019 candidates will have to register to JoSAA in online mode. JEE Main 2019 counselling and seat allotment process will commence tentatively from the second week of June in online mode. The counselling and seat allotment of JEE Main 2019 will be based on candidate’s merit, preference of choices and availability of seats.
